CUC Southern Downs Celebrates 100 Students in Just 121 Days
100 Students Strong!
CUC Southern Downs is proud to announce an exciting milestone – 100 students have officially registered to study with us, only 121 days after our doors first opened.
This achievement reflects the strong and growing demand for accessible, high-quality tertiary study support across the Southern Downs region. Students from Warwick, Stanthorpe, Allora, Killarney, Tenterfield and surrounding communities are now using the Centre to pursue university and vocational education while staying connected to their local community.
From quiet study rooms and high-speed internet to one-on-one support and a welcoming, inclusive environment, CUC Southern Downs has quickly become a vital hub for learners at all stages of their education journey.
A Message From Centre Manager, Alyce Lotz
“Reaching 100 students is an extraordinary milestone for CUC Southern Downs, and one that fills me with immense pride and gratitude. When we opened our doors just a few months ago, we knew there was a need for accessible, high-quality tertiary study support in our region – but the response from our students and community has exceeded every expectation.
Every one of our 100 students represents a story of determination, courage, and ambition. They are balancing work, families, farms, apprenticeships, businesses, and community commitments, all while pursuing their education. These students are showing what’s possible when regional learners are given the right environment, the right support, and a place that truly belongs to them.
Seeing our study rooms full, our students connecting with one another, and hearing their stories of improved motivation, confidence, and wellbeing has been the most rewarding part of this journey. The messages of thanks, the excitement when an assignment is submitted, and the small daily wins fuel everything we do here.
This milestone is not just about numbers, it’s about opportunity. It’s about ensuring that people from the Southern Downs don’t have to leave their community or sacrifice their lifestyle to get a world-class education. It’s about levelling the playing field for regional students and giving them a place where they feel seen, supported, and capable. We are so proud of them.”
A Message From the CUC Southern Downs Board Chair, Vic Pennisi
“Every Australian cricketer dreams of reaching a century, and while we initially anticipated enrolling 50 students by Christmas, the Country University Centre Southern Downs has proudly reached that milestone far sooner. With the right people in place, an exceptional facility available to our students, and a welcoming, safe environment in which to study, we have achieved our first century.
Our one hundredth student was enrolled on 7 November — just 121 days after our official launch. The journey to this point has certainly had its challenges, but the remarkable outcomes we have achieved far outweigh any obstacles encountered along the way.
I wish to acknowledge and extend my sincere gratitude to all those who have supported us throughout this journey. In particular, I would like to recognise the invaluable contributions of our Board, our Centre Manager, Ms Alyce Lotz, and her assistant, Ms Lorna Moore, whose dedication and professionalism have been instrumental to our success. The achievements of any organisation are directly related to the calibre and commitment of the people who share its vision, and we are fortunate to have both a highly skilled Board and outstanding staff.
To our students, I offer my heartfelt thanks for placing your trust in us and for the many kind messages you have shared. You are the future leaders of our region and our nation, and it is a privilege to play even a small role in your educational journey. You are making a difference to our community already, and I cannot wait to hear what the future holds for you.
At this significant milestone, I am reminded of the words of Margaret Mead:
“Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world. Indeed, it is the only thing that ever has.”
To all who have contributed to our success, thank you once again. Our focus now turns to the next goal — the double century, not out.
Supporting Students Across the Region
Our students represent a diverse range of universities, TAFE providers, disciplines, ages, and study pathways. Whether completing undergraduate degrees, postgraduate qualifications, vocational certificates, Head Start programs, or apprenticeships, students have embraced the Centre as a place to learn, connect, and grow.
Looking Ahead
With demand continuing to rise, CUC Southern Downs remains committed to expanding opportunities for regional students – including future growth into Stanthorpe and additional support initiatives planned for 2026.
